- Message Store (or Messages Store Agent) - the program that handles the storage of emails for retrieval by the MUA. Examples: Courier-IMAP, dovecot.
- MTA
- Message Transport Agent - The program used to transport mail from one site to another. Examples: Postfix, Sendmail and qmail
- MUA
- Message User Agent - The program used to read email. Examples: Thunderbird, iMail, Evolution
